Choosing and Setting Up a Nesting Box

Chickens prefer to lay their eggs in a quiet, sheltered and relatively dark place with a soft surface. Studies have shown that hens are willing to go to considerable lengths to find a preferred nesting site. An ideal nesting box has walls and a roof, with the inside kept fairly dark.

The bottom of the nest should be covered with a few centimetres of suitable bedding. Straw or dry hay can be used, or the same bedding material used on the floor of the chicken coop.

As a general guideline, provide at least one nesting box compartment for every four hens.

In the wild, hens naturally lay their eggs close to the ground, but domestic chickens can also become accustomed to using nesting boxes positioned higher up.
