Foreign objects in the feed, such as nails, iron wires or a piece of metal, pose a great risk to cattle. Cattle are not selective when eating feed. Foreign objects end up in the reticulum, where they can drill through the reticulum wall as the reticulum mixes and transports food forward by contracting. This can lead to an infection and inflammatory reaction in the abdominal cavity. The organs around the reticulum can also be damaged. When suspected that a cattle has eaten a foreign object, early placement of a ruminal magnet can lead to the animal's recovery in 2-3 days. Preventive placement of a ruminal magnet has also proven to be a good course of action.
