A horse is an animal of flight – it will never yield to pressure or pain, it will either move away from it or run away. To obtain control we need to remove the resistance. To remove the resistance, one must remove the pressure or distribute the pressure over a larger surface area.
HOW TO FIT A BIT
Getting the fit of the bit correct is vitally important to the horse’s comfort. A bit that is far too small can cause pinching of the lips, but a bit that is too large can cause even more problems.
We have only been taught to look at how the bit fits the outside of the lips, without any consideration of how the bit functions inside of the mouth. When the mouthpiece is too large, the joints move, and the curves can sit incorrectly in the mouth. This leads to the mouthpiece applying pressure to areas it should not be.
An oversized bit will also create too much movement in the mouth. Allowing the bit to slide from side to side through the mouth. This movement causes discomfort as well as a background noise to the rider’s aids. When it comes to selecting the correct size, we need to take into account the horse’s actual mouth measurement but also consider how fleshy the lips are, how wide the lower jaw is and where the horses teeth are in relation to where the bit will sit.
STEP 1
MEASURE THE HORSE'S MOUTH FOR A LOOSE AND FIXED CHEEKPIECE
Make a note of the traditional mouth measurement and again after gently compressing the lips.
LOOSE, Traditional measurement, add 5mm to avoid any pinch.
FIXED AND LOOSE & FIXED, Compress the lips until a snug fit, eliminating any side to side movement of the mouthpiece through the mouth.
STEP 2
TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE MOUTHPIECE
Bombers bits 6 different types of mouthpieces: Solid, Semi-Broken, Cable, 1 Break, 2 Break, Flexible
Bombers recommended thickness for each width:
- thickness 10 mm (B10), width 90-115 mm
- thickness 12 mm (B12), width 120-130 mm
- thickness 14 mm (B14), width 135-145 mm
- thickness 16 mm (B16), width 150-160 mm
Note, thinner mouthpiece is stronger than recommended thickness.

INTERDENTAL SPACE
Position over the widest part of the lower jaw, avoiding any obstructions. The horse’s balance point is its head, unlike cats, dogs where the balance point is in the tail.
By watching the frame and composure of a horse, and in particular its head, resistance can be identified and though incremental bitting changes, the Bombers Methodology can help make a good horse great.
The Goal of bitting
The horse takes and is receptive to contact, its head is settled and comfortable, with a relaxed mouth and increased salivation.
Conformation
Before the bitting process starts, the horse conformation must be noted, for any factors which may contribute to the bit pressures and the horse’s preferences.
Take a wholistic view before bitting… it is important to remember the entire horse is an interlinked machine, with many factors needing to be perfectly balanced to find harmony. One factor of which is the bit and its immediate relationship with the horse’s tongue.
When bit fitting, seekout negative resistance to the bit, clear signs from the horse due to the bit alone… and not from an external factor.
BARS
Bar pressure is generally well received and will encourage poll flexion. Bomber recommends moving the bits pressure to the bars while providing tongue relief.
Examine the surfaces of both bars with your thumbs at the same time.
- are the bars smooth or sharp?
- are there any sharp edges?
- are the bars equally high?
- do you feel or see any damages?
If the bars are sharp or sensitive, there is some damages or horse resist the bar pressure. Avoid bits where is too much bar and pinch pressure.
PINCH
All broken bits create some pinch. Single break bits such as the snaffle create the most pinch. Double break bits all create some pinch, determined by the width of the centre component.
THE GAP BETWEEN BARS
Examine how many fingers fits between the bars. Make sure the horse closes its mouth. The bit should not be thicker than the gap between the bars. Usually, the horse has a big gap between bars, so it doesn't limit the thickness of the bit.
Note that the horse's top jaw is wide and the bottom jaw very thin. So the bit sits in a very thin place.

LIPS
The length of the smile will also determine where the bit sits. Optimal being in front of the premolars over the widest section of the lower bars. Fleshy lips can also be squeezed slightly with a fixed cheekpiece, to achieve a snug fit.
Examine with your fingers how thick and fleshy horse’s lips are..
- are the lips thin or thick?
- are the lips fleshy inside the mouth?
- do you feel or see any damages?
- how long is the horse’s smile?
If the horse have thick and fleshy lips the bit sizing has to be just right. Avoid too wide or thin bits. The length of the smile will also determine where the bit sits. Optimal being in front of the premolars over the widest section of the lower bars. An oversized bit allowing the bit to slide from side to side through the mouth, the joints move, and the curves can sit incorrectly in the mouth.

TONGUE
All bits place some tongue pressure which encourages flexion at the poll. Aim for a relaxed tongue and jaw. This will translate to a relaxed neck, leading onto a relaxed back and free-moving hindquarter and shoulder.
Gently place your finger on the horse's tongue and wait for the horse's reaction..
- avoides finger pressure?
- pushes the tongue into the throat?
- no specific reaction?
If the horse's tongue is very sensitive or horse resist the tongue pressure. Avoid bits where is too much tongue pressure. Recommended the tongue ported mouthpieces to give maximum tongue relief.
Bitting problems have several ways of manifesting themselves.
They can be directly related to the bit and its mechanics. Resulting in the horses head not settling and resisting bit contact… described as shaking, pulling or avoiding contact.
Alternatively, problems can originate from physiological discomforts… which can be seen from a holistic view in the movement of the horse. While having the neck, back and teeth checked can solve much of this… problems can persist as a result of peculiar mouth conformations.

BOMBERS BITS - PRESSURE POINTS
We have made some very important changes to our handcrafted bits which is why they are so well received by the horses. The sweet iron is warmer than stainless steel, it encourages salivation, the curved mouth pieces reduce tongue pressure, the links are small and offset thus relieving a pressure point on the tongue.
With our thorough understanding of the mechanics of the various cheek pieces and mouth pieces we can correct negative action of the horse’s head and we can also position the head correctly. This, together with our understanding of the requirements of the disciplines, conformation of the various breeds, as well as the individuality of the Rider has resulted in our extensive range of bits.
Our sizes start at 90mm widths up to 160mm width and size of all our bits are stamped on the left hand side of the mouth piece which also indicates which way the bit should be fitted to the bridle thus avoiding incorrect usage.
Our extensive range of the bits includes training and corrective bits that can eradicate a problem allowing the horse to continue on to a conventional bit suited to the discipline.
Riders at the top level may require a small tweak here or there in order to achieve a win and this is what we can offer with our philosophy.
GREY, Utilises no pressure, the optimum case however this is not realistic in every situation.
GREEN, Registers a light pressure, applied over a large surface area to achieve a better positioning of the head.
ORANGE, Indicates that medium pressure is being applied to correct a problem or to achieve necessary control.
RED, Is the maximum pressure, the rider should be cautious and question this use.
BOMBERS - MOUTH PRESSURE POINTS
BAR pressure is applied by most mouth pieces and is generally accepted by the horse, bringing the head down.
PINCH or nutcracker action of a single break mouth piece such as a conventional snaffle will put heavy pressure on the side of the bars causing the head to lift. A curved or 3 piece mouth piece relieves this nutcracker action slightly, making it more accepted. A solid mouth piece will remove this action.
TONGUE pressure is accepted by most horses and will bring the head down.
BOMBERS - HEAD PRESSURE POINTS
CHEEK pressure is useful for schooling, encouraging flexion and directing the horse.
CURB pressure may be necessary to improve control, as well as to encourage the chin to tuck in. Curb chain pressure is severe due to the sensitive area of application but can be softened by distributing the pressure to other areas such as mouth and poll. Nylon or leather back straps are a softer option to a curb chain.
POLL pressure is applied through the bridle and will increase proportionally to the length of the bits upper shank/purchase. When applied to a horse that accepts this form of pressure it will bring the head down. Poll pressure is usually used in conjunction with other pressure points, making it more accepted.

SOLID BIT, The mouthpiece is fixed between cheekpieces, optionally offering tongue relief in the form of a port.
SEMI-BROKEN BIT, The joint is hindered from making its full movement, thereby limiting the horse bit’s action and lessening the squeeze.
1 BREAK SNAFFLE BIT, When applied the single break snaffle bit squeezes the bars and tongue raising the head.
2 BREAK BIT, Double break bits have a middle component that sits on the tongue. Some extent of squeeze will occur.
FLEXIBLE BIT, Flexible mouthpieces wrap around the horse’s tongue and bars spreading the pressure.
CABLE BIT, Removes the centre links, creating a smooth more comfortable mouthpiece with rigidity, limiting the nutcracker effect. The spring back offers a quick release from pressure. The cable allows for lateral independence between reins.
BOMBERS BITS - TYPES OF CHEEKPIECE
LOOSE, A loose cheek piece moves vertically through the mouthpiece of the bit. The mouthpiece slips on the cheekpiece loose ring resulting in poll pressure while allowing the horse to react before the mouthpiece catches on the cheekpiece and is leveraged. With the release of the reins and tension the mouthpiece quickly returns to neutral.
FIXED, The mouthpiece is fixed to the cheekpiece, as the cheekpiece rotates under rein pressure the mouthpiece is leveraged in the horses mouth. With the release of the reins and tension the cheekpiece is slow to return to neutral. A fixed cheek piece is designed to sit closely to the horses.
FIXED & LOOSE, A unique group of cheek pieces are fixed against the cheek and exhibit the positive features of a loose ring. A fixed cheek piece is designed to sit closely to the horses lips, and encourages flexion. The loose ring will slip through mouthpiece resulting in some poll pressure but allowing for the horse to react before the mouthpiece starts to be leveraged.

Kimblewick Lite Bomber Blue
Bombers Kimblewick Lite Bomber Blue. Bomber Blue belongs to the first category at the Bombers bit category; Solid.
SOLID: The mouthpiece is fixed between cheek pieces, optionally offering tongue relief in the form of a port. When used in conjunction with a fixed cheekpiece it should fit tightly to eliminate and sideward movement.

MOUTHPIECE
The Bomber Blue is a unique bit which produces amazing results for the majority of horses. The mouthpiece is ported to give tongue relief. The nylon composite material is light in the mouth and encourages salivation. It is particularly well suited to horses that object to metal mouth pieces.
The first choice for starting any young horse, it is easily accepted, it gives tongue relief, it’s light, non-metal and encourages salivation. If in doubt go with the Bombers suggested thickness for your width. The 4 available ports have been scaled according to each width. This ensures accurate fitting over the bars and eliminates the rocking movement which occurs when the port is too wide.

CHEEKPIECE
Kimblewick Lite – The Kimblewick Lite is softer cheekpiece than normal Kimblewick, the upper arm is shorter which make huge different between these two similar cheekpieces. Kimblewick Lite has a lower pressure. As with the Pelham, the action of the Kimblewick is dependent upon the position of the riders hands.
The rein slides on the Dee shaped bit ring. If the hands are lowered prior to pressure being applied to the reins, the rein will slide about an inch and the bit will assume roughly a 45° angle in the mouth. Causing the mouthpiece to act in a downward and backward motion on the lower jaw, this is complemented by a downward pressure on the poll, giving the bit a lowering action. Cheek pieces made in very best stainless steel.
There are 3 rein settings which increase or decrease the pressure. Bomber would recommend this for the more experienced rider and for show jumping and eventing where the multiple pressure settings allow for quick adjustment. Supplied with a nylon curb strap. The cheekpiece is available in standard size (width 70 mm, height 120 mm, purchase 47 mm).
Reins can be attached at:
Bigger ring = Removes the poll pressure decreasing the mouthpiece leverage.
Middle small ring = Introduces light poll pressure leveraging the mouthpiece.
Lower side small ring = Introduces poll pressure leveraging the mouthpiece.

Overall effects of the bit
The bit consists of a mouthpiece inside the mouth and a cheekpiece acting outside the head. The overall effects of the bit should be mutually supportive and guiding aids for the horse, as the horse will not be able to understand the rider’s use of conflicting / mutually exclusive aids. When using stronger lever bit, the rider should be aware of and understand the operation of the bits and their effects.
The unpleasant pressure or pain caused by the bit always causes resistance in the horse, like the so-called an escape reaction in which the rider loses contact or control of the horse. This type of loss of control of the horse usually only results in the choice of an even stronger bit, although the situation would usually require a softer alternative.

Getting the fit of the bit correct is vitally important to the horse’s comfort. A bit that is far too small can cause pinching of the lips, but a bit that is too large can cause even more problems.
We have only been taught to look at how the bit fits the outside of the lips, without any consideration of how the bit functions inside of the mouth. When the mouthpiece is too large, the joints move, and the curves can sit incorrectly in the mouth. This leads to the mouthpiece applying pressure to areas it should not be.
An oversized bit will also create too much movement in the mouth. Allowing the bit to slide from side to side through the mouth. This movement causes discomfort as well as a background noise to the rider’s aids. When it comes to selecting the correct size, we need to take into account the horse’s actual mouth measurement but also consider how fleshy the lips are, how wide the lower jaw is and where the horses teeth are in relation to where the bit will sit.
STEP 1
MEASURE THE HORSE'S MOUTH FOR A LOOSE AND FIXED CHEEKPIECE
Make a note of the traditional mouth measurement and again after gently compressing the lips.
LOOSE, Traditional measurement, add 5mm to avoid any pinch.
FIXED AND LOOSE & FIXED, Compress the lips until a snug fit, eliminating any side to side movement of the mouthpiece through the mouth.
STEP 2
TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE MOUTHPIECE
Bombers bits 6 different types of mouthpieces: Solid, Semi-Broken, Cable, 1 Break, 2 Break, Flexible
Bombers recommended thickness for each width:
- thickness 10 mm (B10), width 90-115 mm
- thickness 12 mm (B12), width 120-130 mm
- thickness 14 mm (B14), width 135-145 mm
- thickness 16 mm (B16), width 150-160 mm
Note, thinner mouthpiece is stronger than recommended thickness.

INTERDENTAL SPACE
Position over the widest part of the lower jaw, avoiding any obstructions. The horse’s balance point is its head, unlike cats, dogs where the balance point is in the tail.
By watching the frame and composure of a horse, and in particular its head, resistance can be identified and though incremental bitting changes, the Bombers Methodology can help make a good horse great.
The Goal of bitting
The horse takes and is receptive to contact, its head is settled and comfortable, with a relaxed mouth and increased salivation.
Conformation
Before the bitting process starts, the horse conformation must be noted, for any factors which may contribute to the bit pressures and the horse’s preferences.
Take a wholistic view before bitting… it is important to remember the entire horse is an interlinked machine, with many factors needing to be perfectly balanced to find harmony. One factor of which is the bit and its immediate relationship with the horse’s tongue.
When bit fitting, seekout negative resistance to the bit, clear signs from the horse due to the bit alone… and not from an external factor.
BARS
Bar pressure is generally well received and will encourage poll flexion. Bomber recommends moving the bits pressure to the bars while providing tongue relief.
Examine the surfaces of both bars with your thumbs at the same time.
- are the bars smooth or sharp?
- are there any sharp edges?
- are the bars equally high?
- do you feel or see any damages?
If the bars are sharp or sensitive, there is some damages or horse resist the bar pressure. Avoid bits where is too much bar and pinch pressure.
PINCH
All broken bits create some pinch. Single break bits such as the snaffle create the most pinch. Double break bits all create some pinch, determined by the width of the centre component.
THE GAP BETWEEN BARS
Examine how many fingers fits between the bars. Make sure the horse closes its mouth. The bit should not be thicker than the gap between the bars. Usually, the horse has a big gap between bars, so it doesn't limit the thickness of the bit.
Note that the horse's top jaw is wide and the bottom jaw very thin. So the bit sits in a very thin place.

LIPS
The length of the smile will also determine where the bit sits. Optimal being in front of the premolars over the widest section of the lower bars. Fleshy lips can also be squeezed slightly with a fixed cheekpiece, to achieve a snug fit.
Examine with your fingers how thick and fleshy horse’s lips are..
- are the lips thin or thick?
- are the lips fleshy inside the mouth?
- do you feel or see any damages?
- how long is the horse’s smile?
If the horse have thick and fleshy lips the bit sizing has to be just right. Avoid too wide or thin bits. The length of the smile will also determine where the bit sits. Optimal being in front of the premolars over the widest section of the lower bars. - pushes the tongue into the throat?
- no specific reaction?
If the horse's tongue is very sensitive or horse resist the tongue pressure. Avoid bits where is too much tongue pressure. Recommended the tongue ported mouthpieces to give maximum tongue relief.
Bitting problems have several ways of manifesting themselves.
They can be directly related to the bit and its mechanics. Resulting in the horses head not settling and resisting bit contact… described as shaking, pulling or avoiding contact.
Alternatively, problems can originate from physiological discomforts… which can be seen from a holistic view in the movement of the horse. While having the neck, back and teeth checked can solve much of this… problems can persist as a result of peculiar mouth conformations.

We have made some very important changes to our handcrafted bits which is why they are so well received by the horses. The sweet iron is warmer than stainless steel, it encourages salivation, the curved mouth pieces reduce tongue pressure, the links are small and offset thus relieving a pressure point on the tongue.
With our thorough understanding of the mechanics of the various cheek pieces and mouth pieces we can correct negative action of the horse’s head and we can also position the head correctly. This, together with our understanding of the requirements of the disciplines, conformation of the various breeds, as well as the individuality of the Rider has resulted in our extensive range of bits.
Our sizes start at 90mm widths up to 160mm width and size of all our bits are stamped on the left hand side of the mouth piece which also indicates which way the bit should be fitted to the bridle thus avoiding incorrect usage.
Our extensive range of the bits includes training and corrective bits that can eradicate a problem allowing the horse to continue on to a conventional bit suited to the discipline.
Riders at the top level may require a small tweak here or there in order to achieve a win and this is what we can offer with our philosophy.
GREY, Utilises no pressure, the optimum case however this is not realistic in every situation.
GREEN, Registers a light pressure, applied over a large surface area to achieve a better positioning of the head.
ORANGE, Indicates that medium pressure is being applied to correct a problem or to achieve necessary control.
RED, Is the maximum pressure, the rider should be cautious and question this use.
BOMBERS - MOUTH PRESSURE POINTS
BAR pressure is applied by most mouth pieces and is generally accepted by the horse, bringing the head down.
PINCH or nutcracker action of a single break mouth piece such as a conventional snaffle will put heavy pressure on the side of the bars causing the head to lift. A curved or 3 piece mouth piece relieves this nutcracker action slightly, making it more accepted. A solid mouth piece will remove this action.
TONGUE pressure is accepted by most horses and will bring the head down.
BOMBERS - HEAD PRESSURE POINTS
CHEEK pressure is useful for schooling, encouraging flexion and directing the horse.
CURB pressure may be necessary to improve control, as well as to encourage the chin to tuck in. Curb chain pressure is severe due to the sensitive area of application but can be softened by distributing the pressure to other areas such as mouth and poll. Nylon or leather back straps are a softer option to a curb chain.
POLL pressure is applied through the bridle and will increase proportionally to the length of the bits upper shank/purchase. When applied to a horse that accepts this form of pressure it will bring the head down. Poll pressure is usually used in conjunction with other pressure points, making it more accepted.

SEMI-BROKEN BIT, The joint is hindered from making its full movement, thereby limiting the horse bit’s action and lessening the squeeze.
1 BREAK SNAFFLE BIT, When applied the single break snaffle bit squeezes the bars and tongue raising the head.
2 BREAK BIT, Double break bits have a middle component that sits on the tongue. Some extent of squeeze will occur.
FLEXIBLE BIT, Flexible mouthpieces wrap around the horse’s tongue and bars spreading the pressure.
CABLE BIT, Removes the centre links, creating a smooth more comfortable mouthpiece with rigidity, limiting the nutcracker effect. The spring back offers a quick release from pressure. The cable allows for lateral independence between reins.

LOOSE, A loose cheek piece moves vertically through the mouthpiece of the bit. The mouthpiece slips on the cheekpiece loose ring resulting in poll pressure while allowing the horse to react before the mouthpiece catches on the cheekpiece and is leveraged. With the release of the reins and tension the mouthpiece quickly returns to neutral.
FIXED, The mouthpiece is fixed to the cheekpiece, as the cheekpiece rotates under rein pressure the mouthpiece is leveraged in the horses mouth. With the release of the reins and tension the cheekpiece is slow to return to neutral. A fixed cheek piece is designed to sit closely to the horses.
FIXED & LOOSE, A unique group of cheek pieces are fixed against the cheek and exhibit the positive features of a loose ring. A fixed cheek piece is designed to sit closely to the horses lips, and encourages flexion. The loose ring will slip through mouthpiece resulting in some poll pressure but allowing for the horse to react before the mouthpiece starts to be leveraged.
